When Vee looked up from the phone, Vanya saw all the playfulness gone from his eyes.

“I gotta go,” he said as he stood up.

“Is everything okay?”

“Yeah.”

“Then it can wait.”

Vee just looked at her, then walked out. Vanya was heated. No man had ever been that close to her heaven and turned away. The thought irritated her, but the challenge implied by it turned her on.

Vee turned the Ferrari into the half-filled Wal-Mart where Hardy had told him to meet him. He saw the gray Explorer and parked three spots away. A young dude got out of the passenger’s seat. Three more remained in the Explorer.

He approached the Ferrari.

“You Vee?”

“Where’s Hardy?” Vee asked without answering because he didn’t recognize the voices.

“Get out the car,” the dude ordered gruffly.

Vee complied to give the dude the impression he was in control.

“I gotta make sure you ain’t strapped.”

Vee held up his shirt to reveal he was unarmed. Seeing this, the dude spoke with more bass in his voice.
